Vanhoover was an unforgiving city, even to those who had mastered its landscape. The pollution in the air meant that walking around during the heat of the day or the last shred of dawn was as pleasant as being pelted by smoke from a campfire; the mess and tangle of streets made navigating a straight line to anywhere in the city a nightmare; and worst of all the streets were in horrible disarray. Even those who had lived in the city for their entire lives still found that the city would devise new ways to continually dissuade and interrupt the everyday lives and patterns to ruin their days.
