Landscape Tutorial Kinda Thing

People tell me I’m really good at landscapes and I’ve always kinda wanted to do this kind of thing, so here it is! It might not be the most organized, but I’ll do my best.

This’ll be a peaceful looking mountain scene showcasing a mountain in the back and a lush field.

The first thing I start off with is the sky. The sky can be changed to fit the mood of your scene, but remember not to make it plain. It’s always nice to mix and blend a few colors into it. In my case, I stuck to some blues.

Next, I add in some clouds. Clouds come in all shapes and sizes, but I decided to make mine nice and fluffy. I made sure not to go overboard either since I want the blue sky to stay visible.

Now it’s time to add one of the main focuses of the scene. I block in the mountain with a dull, dark color.

Now for the detail. Don’t just add lights and darks willy-nilly. Consider the shape of the mountain and all the little ridges the decorate it’s surface.

Now I add some of the forward brush, keeping to dark colors to represent the shadow underneath all the leaves we’ll add later.

I throw in some of the lights to get the shape of my foreground. This is the point where you rough out the shape of the land. It’s always nice to add some little hills. Remember that the Earth isn’t flat.

To add to the area, I add some bushes. Just a bunch of plain grass is kinda boring, and this gives your something to look at.

image

We’re almost done! Here I added some flowers to serve the same purpose as the bushes. Don’t want too much grass taking up the scene.

The last little detail is added twigs and branches amongst the bushes and trees so they aren’t just floating leaves.

I hope this was helpful and will drive your art to better places!
